Wow, time is flying by this year! I cant believe we are in our fifth month already! We at the In The Bin office have been so busy with our busy touring schedule and filming of our education DVD that we have forgotten to post an updated newsletter! And of course there was Jed’s wedding!
Firstly I would like to congratulate Jed Cahill on his marriage to his partner, Jacinta! Jed and Jacinta held a beautiful ceremony at Currumbin Beach, followed by a perfect reception at Elevations. Jed and Jacinta were both blessed as they couldn’t have asked for a more flawless wedding! Aside from all the wedding preparations, Jed Cahill has been working extremely hard on the In The Bin Educational DVD. Jed is developing a new education DVD while on the road as a tool to strengthen the Education Program. It is also considered something to offer these regional communities in the possibility that the tour will close due to lack of funding and sponsorship support next year. The DVD will include some of Australia’s best film industry professionals providing insight to budding film makers as to how they got to where they are now as well as a koala, emu, parrot and shark playing lawn bowls!
As the Currumbin Short Film Festival is nearing in September we are putting the stress on all film makers to enter their films! February Newsletter
In the Bin has just concluded one of its best festivals to date, the launch of their 2008 touring festival! The festival held in the beautiful surrounds of Deniliquin, NSW was attended by Australian actor, Chris Haywood who was delighted about the outcome of the evening! Chris Haywood, predominately known for his role in Jindabyne, also won Best Male Lead in September 2007 at In The Bin’s Currumbin Film Festival, where he competed against performers such as Garry McDonald, Kerry Armstrong and Ben Rutherford. The launch has now kicked off the touring year for In The Bin, which is hoped to be the best year yet! Touring over 65 communities throughout Australia this year alone, with a strong and entertaining program, In The Bin prides itself on travelling to communities in which other film festivals wont. As well as being Australia’s largest touring film festival, In The Bin is the only festival in Australia which pays film makers screening fees. In The Bin also delivers an educational program which inspires and educates budding film enthusiasts on short films and film making to communities across Australia. The vision for the In the Bin Touring Festival is to reach as many communities as possible within Australia, educating more people on all facets of film and film making. The Touring Festival is currently the largest educational film workshop in Australia. Mayor of Deniliquin, Lyndsey Renwick quoted that ‘ It was exceptional to acquire such a high quality Short Film Festival in our region, as we are a regional community we are usually uncared for in regards to cultural events. Our community felt it was an immense excitement to have In The Bin in Deniliquin to be enjoyed by all” Patron of In The Bin short film Festival, Jack Thompson, who unfortunately couldn’t attend the Deniliquin Launch, has quoted “I think what these guys are doing is just terrific,” said Thompson. “I’m showing my support by advocating to the Australia public that this is a good thing, it’s getting film out to everyone in Australia and I’m really behind that, “he added Director of the festival, Jed Cahill, quotes that the main objective behind In The Bin is to deliver a cultural experience to communities which are not usually fortunate enough to be given the same sort of enriching events which are delivered to the larger cities. The Deniliquin Launch, which was enjoyed by film buffs and friends and family alike, was the first touring film launch for In The Bin and was a great way to celebrate and commence the great year ahead for In The Bin. With the conclusion of the Deniliquin Launch, Jed is now set to travel to over 65 regional communities across Australia. These dates can be viewed here and will be updated every few months to keep up with the touring. In conclusion, we are also calling for entries for the In The Bin Currumbin Short Film Festival, so if you are a short film maker, or know someone who is and might be interested in submitting their film, please click here. You can be a part of this if you have a film under 15mins long!!! In The Bin is one of the only touring Film Festivals in Australia to pay film makers every time we show their films, and your films will have the opportunity to screen is some of Australia’s most unique places

From Jed “Long time on the road… and I have to say Australia is one huge place!!!! I though it was big getting around QLD, NSW, VIC, and, SA. Now I can add Western Australia to my belt. All in all a great and eventful tour of the state although very chilly. Where do I start, In The Bin almost didn’t get to Western Australia as I managed after all warnings, advice, and map reading to run out of petrol on the crossing of the Nullabor. I was aiming to get to a petrol station that I soon found out wasn’t there any more, might be good to upgrade my maps,, hang on I only bought them two months ago???!!! Well what is a trip without an adventure? After all I did once try to cross the Bloomfield track in Northern QLD in my 2 wheel drive commercial van, once because I only managed to get halfway across the first river??? Australia is a stunning place full of so many cinematic landscapes and environments, and it was great to see the students use them to their best advantage. On the students I have had an amazing time with all of you, by far my best tour around Australia to date, and huge thank you to the communities and students that made it that way.” Jed Cahill In The Bin Festival Director.

South West Arts… It was a case of just what the doctor ordered when In The Bin hit the road for Shooting the Bin in the Great South West in March. Eight Communities in 4 weeks, taking in Hillston, Hay, Balranald, Coleambally Finley, Barham, Moama, and concluding with 100’s of students in Deniliquin. Over 32 students films produced in the regional workshops. The top 16 films were then screened with the film makers networking in Deniliquin. The standard of the films was exceptional with “6 Ways to Get a Girl” winning Finley the major prize of Avid Epress Pro. Each location had their own festival where the four short films that were produced locally were screened along with In The Bin Film Festival. The audience then applauded for their favorite two films which then went on to screen in Deniliquin. The response from the local commuities was amazing, examples of locations such as Hay, and Coleambally, attracting audiences of over 200 people, which is huge when comparing the size of the communities. How fast was 2006 and already we are in April 2007!!! As they say time flies when you're having fun, and by the looks of things a lot of you are having fun with In The Bin and the Education Programs. With our next tour totally booked up until July in total we have 37 communities, this time last year we had booked 18!!! For a full list of tour details please visit this link.
Welcome to the In The Bin Crew With the expansion of tours, locations, and event states (this will be our first year in Western Australia) In The Bin has expanded its crew, so we think its time that we introduce ourselves. Of course we are an arts organization so our crew is extremely small but none the less very talented.
Jed Cahill is first in line and fair enough, he created In The Bin back in 1999, and has toured it nearly its entire time throughout Australia, and continuing the tour this year. Jed discovered film making at an early age and pursued it through short film making and constantly participating in workshops and education programs to gain a stronger understanding of film making. In The Bin was created by him as an opportunity to present the short film community to regions who would not otherwise have the opportunity to experience such an event. A film maker himself he understood the importance of rewarding all films screened at the festivals which resulted in In The Bin providing screening fee’s to film makers while the film was on tour. Coming from a background of participating in workshops and attending other festivals it was important for Jed to ensure the festival and workshops were financial accessible for all communities and participants. Developing a system where he could keep costs to a minimum for councils and community organizations yet offer them the highest standard of films and education. This will be his 5th year on the road with In The Bin Touring Festival and although some people might find over 8 months on the road a daunting task, so does Jed. But honestly the appreciation, hospitality and support the communities show Jed while he is out and about makes it all worth while for him.
Dana Dowker was actually Dana Cahill in a past life when she was free and fabulous, now married with a balancing act of four kids aged 10 to 4 Dana is now Dana Dowker and family and fabulous!!! Dana started working with In The Bin as a way of helping her little brother Jed out. Now, if you have anything to do with In The Bin chances are you will be dealing with Dana on a day to day basis. Originally studying psychology Dana agrees you have to be a psychologist to be able to work with Jed, however Dana loves the career change as it gives her more time to spend with her family, even if that includes her painful brother.
Rachael Hutson, in keeping it in the family Rachael is no way related to the Cahill’s however at an early age she was babysat by Dana, now in a reversal of roles she baby-sits Dana and Jed. Rachael holds the mighty roll of administration and everything in-between as Jed would call it. Rachael loves the fact that In The Bin is a touring festival meaning she only has to work beside Jed for 4 months of the year.
In The Bin on the Road Again with Jed at the wheel, driving all over the states of New South Wales, South Australia, Qeensland and for the first time Western Australia. “I am really excited about this tour coming up” Jed said “I have over 36 communities to go to which is going to be really fun, if only I didn’t have to drive to all of them” This is definitely In The Bin’s largest tour to date and with a record number of Education Programs, which have been rebuilt this year to accommodate new equipment, advanced film makers and also new film makers. Some councils did actually miss out on this tour due to the overwhelming response, so don’t delay get in quick and book your spots for bookings in 2008!!! To see where we are going to on this tour please click here. To register an expression of interest email rachel@inthebin.net.au
Urgent message to all councils booked for 2006 from August to December, Jed was smart enough to not save his tour dates before he reinstalled his computer as a result he has lost his main record of dates, he does have an older soft copy but needs all councils booked in the months of August, September, October, November and December to email back their dates as soon as possible so he can ensure everything is accurate. If this does not happen he can not guarantee that your location wont be replaced by another community.

The “Bin Van” is being unpacked and the hire equipment returned as In The Bin finishes up its hugely successful tour of regional NSW, SA, and Vic for 2006. 13 communities participated in the October –November tour with over 2,500 people attending festival screenings, 30 short films produced from the Education Program, and over 150 students participating in the workshops over the last two months.

In The Bin has just completed its second major film project, this time, with the Sate Library of Queensland. The film is a 20min Documentary on the Indigenous Knowledge Centre of Wujal Wujal, it has been made as an opportunity for other IKC’s supported by the Sate Library to see how the Wujal Wujal centre operates successfully. This has been a lengthy but rewarding process with the film being hailed as not just an educational success but also an entertaining success. In The Bin conducts a limited number of special projects a year for councils, community groups and government agencies, to see how your community can be involved or find out more about the projects
