Got a question ask us info@inthebin.net.au
Q:I attended the work shop you did at Castle hill on Friday to Sunday. I’ve also thought a lot about developing my film making skills and I wanted to ask you in your opinion what type of qualification would be the best, a private college, TAFE, University. I know there are a lot of different areas you can go into, but I’m not sure which one I’m more interested in, I like all the aspects of film making.
A:Good question,,, All of the three options work its just the standard of the institute that you chose make sure you can visit each first,
- make sure you are able to access the equipment outside of assessment time free of cost or at a low cost.
- Ask for a show real with past students film made at the institute.
- Ask for a list of their lecturers and what areas they specialize in (make sure they are area’s you are interested in)
- And make sure you are getting the most opportunity for your dollar.
Another option is to contact AFTRS or VCA and find out of them which institutes they would recommend. And what would make the best possibilities for you to enter AFTRS or VCA. Also ask if you can volunteer there during their shoots, it’s a great learning experience, and a great way to network.
Question: I don't have any good editing software. is there a free or cheap version of Avid, the editing program, please i need something better than movie maker.
Answer: There is a free version of Avid available on our website. Or click on the link right here. http://www.avid.com/forms/freeDVRegDownload.asp It is a good starting point however if you are looking at developing your editing skills I think your best bet would be to purchase a xpress DV version of the program it is middle of the range and perfect for learning film makers. You can purchase it from the following web address www.videopro.com.au . Ask for Wayne Newton and you will receive specials only available to In The Bin

To review past questions and answers please click here. Q I have a kid who just wants to record his project to DVD without going through Sorensen squeeze and DVDIT. Is this possible? I have tried exporting the file but when i try to burn it using Nero it tells me the file is incompatible. A
When you try to output your footage from any editing system it must be formatted to be a file that DVD’s and players can read. This is a conmen problem that festivals have where film makers use cheap programs and output their films in a format not readable for DVD players and sometimes even other computers. As a result their entries are not usable and there have wasted the time of the entrant. Nero is a good program because it wont let you burn a DVD unless it is in the right format. Sorenson Squeeze is one of the best compression programs and it works well with Nero. I suggest running the film through Sorenson and making the footage into a MPEG ½ DVD PAL Lg, your film will not be compressed and it will be formatted into a file that Nero can read. If you are trying to burn an edited project straight onto a disk chances are it is not going to work on many DVD players. I can understand why the film maker doesn’t want to run it through a compression program so they don’t loose quality, but rest assured they will not loose quality if they are using the correct programs and judging by them using Avid Sorenson, and Nero they should be just fine.
